Okay, Im really freaked out right now.. So a couple weeks ago I formatted my hard drive and I accedentally forgot to back up a buncvh of smei important files.... and now, 3 weeks later ( I FORMATTED THE DRIVE AND REPARTITIONED IT!) the files are back in their exact same directories
And now, Ive come to the conclusion that Linux == Jesus

Is there any way this is possible?

I'm not sure which answer you are looking for. Both "apparently so" and "no" seem equally applicable. I guess when it comes to religion, there are no hard answers :-)

The same thing has happened to me, and I am at a loss to explain it.

I must disagree you, if you either
1) format the drive;
2) create partitions just where they was before;
3) these partitions have the same FS;
you don't loose your data.
You can erase data if you either
1) create partitions starting from other Start Cylinders as they were before;
2) create another FS on a partition (and use it);
3) use "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdaX" to zero every byte of your HDD.

Formatting over a filesystem with the same filesystem should still result in an empty filesystem.

I am at a loss to explain this, other than possibly your new filesystem became corrupted with data from the old filesystem. Are ALL the files gone?

I agree with Matir. It's still possible that Linux==The Devil and the contents of the files are not the same

I believe I heard somewhere that to resize a reisers partition all you have to do is delete it and make a new (larger) one in the same place. That might help to explain what happened. (now dont go trying that, I dont know for sure if it will work, or delete all you're files)

Hey don't take it that way. I am sure that what ever is truly good in Linux was programmed by Jesus.

And you should know, that Jesus saves, much more than just HDs.

Put five loaves and two fishes in front of the computer, then see if you can open a restauraunt with it. It'll give you something to do while you mourn the loss of everything on that drive...

I concluded long ago that computers are not deterministic. The reason, however, lies in the fact that we can never know ALL of the details of what's in them--plus there are random bit upsets caused by things like cosmic rays.

I doubt if I would ever get computers and religion mixed up. Computers are just another tool that man invented to make his life "better". Religion is supposed to do that in much more fundamental and sustainable ways.

Religion is not part of what happened to the OP's HD. As several have pointed out, he most likely did NOT re-format the drive--only thought he did.

2. You are stupid, I said the files were not there for 3 weeks then reappeared.
3. I'm not an imbecile, I think I notice when I delete a partition and make a new one.
