LILO problem (LIL-) w/Rh7.1

I'm running RH7.1, dual-booting with W2K using the NT loader with lilo on the root partition. Lilo worked fine after install, but recently it halts with LIL-. I checked lilo.conf (below) and ran /sbin/lilo, but to no avail.

Thanks for any help!
-Ralph Grove

Something else strange happens - the link /boot/System.map is being redefined to point to System.map from an older kernel when Lilo fails.

Lilo.conf:
boot=/dev/hda8
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
linear
default=linux

other=/dev/hda1
optional
label=dos

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.9-6
label=linux.bak
root=/dev/hda8
read-only

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.9-12
label=linux
root=/dev/hda8
read-only

I don't know how much this will help, but the error you are getting indicates a hard disk geometry mismatch. The question I wonder about, is what caused it. This web page may help.

I don't know if this will give you enough information to get your system working again, but hope this helps.

Good luck.

This is happening probably because
1 either, you altered the partitions recently using partition magic etc
2. or installed lilo again..

Solution:
Run lilo again (lilo -r /)
create the linux.bin file again using dd=/dev/hda8 of=/linix.bin bs=512 count=1, and moving that file to c:\
(i suppose you alreday know about it)

hope this helps..

Smile Problem Solved

For the record, Ravi was correct. I didn't realize that I need to recopy the linux boot record to my Win2K C:\ directory each time I upgrade the linux kernel.

After doing that, the NT loader correctly booted linux.

Thanks very much.
