Question lilo bios 0x82 problems ...

I got something like this : "bios 0x82 error ... please make a boot disk to be able "... if I'm not wrong, when my RH 7.1 try to write lilo in MBR.

I have installed Win98 and when I try to install RH 7.1 I got that error.

What's the problem there ?

Regards.

In your BIOS is your harddisk the primary master IDE device?? As Windows would still see it as C: even if it was the secondary master device and wouldn't care, but LILO will be explicitly writing to the primary master IDE device, which as far as the BIOS is concerned isn't there!! The other thing I can think of is do you have a new motherboard with a set of ATA-100 IDE channels in addition to 2 non-ATA-100 channels? And is your hard disk on one of these controllers? If this is the case then LILO will be trying to write to the wrong device as these ATA 100 controllers are normally seen as the 3rd and 4th IDE channels hence provide devices /dev/hde thru /dev/hdh in which case you will want to get LILO to install to the boot record on /dev/hde.

Does that make sense?

cheers

Jamie...

Thumbs down same type of problem

I am having the same problem here. I have a soyo tech. dragon plus with an AMD Athlon xp 1600+.

I have two hard drives. One is 40 gig and is the master on IDE 1, with a DVD as the slave.

The second hard drive is a wd 30gig is the slave on the second ide and it is partitioned six gigs for Red Hat 7.1 and the rest Windows

This is me.

I had it working once when the hard drives were on the same IDE. The 40 was still the master and the 30 the slave. Then I wanted my cd's on separate IDE to get better proformance when making backups of cd's On the second IDE the cd writer is the master, and I think that is the problem.
