KVM Switch Problems

I recently purchased a KVM switch with mouse and keyboard emulation to use with my win 98 and linux machines. I am using a logitech ps/2 optical wheel mouse. Whenever I switch to my win 98 machine and back to linux, the mouse cursor is stuck in the upper right hand corner and will not move. Any help getting this KVM switch would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone knows of a compatiple KVM switch, that would be great too. THANKS!!

Mysteriously the problem has fixed itself .... Im not sure how, but thanks anyways to those who sent me advice!

* damn *

I was about to say that the KVM switch is more of a hardware issue than a software one. I tried removing the KB plug (PS/2 style) and reinserting it - no prob. Then I tried removing the wheelmouse and reinserting - bad news. It was <CTRL>+<ALT>+><BACKSPACE> for me as any mouse movements were, um, erratic.

So is this just an XWindows thing?

well, having had this problem, i can tell you that it will recur most likely, and the problem is the switch.

when i bought another switch (one that's ac adapter powered) instead of the other basic kind, i never had that problem again. it's more expensive, but you won't have that problem again.

Hey....i use KDE and i have the same problem....my mouse stays in the bottom left corner.....and it opens a lot of windows too....

It works fine if i hook straight up to cpu, but not throught switch....

It is a Linksys KVM 2 port switch....anybody had that problem.. ...and is there a fix(i doubt)....

Bump...
I have the exact same problem. Linksys 2 port kvm switch, a machine with RedHat7.1 and one with Win98. Tried using a logitech optical and an older logitech 3 button mouse. Both get stuck in linux and open windows and such, but both of them work fine when hooked up w/out the switch and they both work fine through the switch to the win98 machine... any fixes for this or should I just buy a new switch? and any recomendations for a fairly inexpensive switch?

Thanks!

I have the same problem, with Vastech 4 port KVM. I can't control the mouse at all, and in X, it hangs in the upper right corner.

Since this configuration works fine with various versions of Windows (98,ME,2K,XP), I don't understand why you'd say there's somethign wrong with the KVM hardware. My guess is that it's Linux, not the hardware.

I think there's a patch missing somewhere.

(sorry for the intrusion)...

Also having the problems with the Linksys KVM 2port

I also have the problem with the Linksys 2port KVM. When I switch into linux the mouse goes crazy and sticks in the upper right corner and just pops up new command lines

stupid first response... had to get a new switch and the problem came back.

i found this to be a helpful solution:

/etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
this line--> Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

try it. let me know how it goes.

I have the same problem... with a Belkin Omin Cube 4 Port.

It s 3 SuSE 7.3 boxes.. and one Windows

I am assuming its the box.. but the mouse dose not go weird on me with the windows box...

punt was right

Hey Punt,

Excellent catch. I edited my XF86Config-4 and changed the line:

Option "Protocol" "PS/2"

to read

Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"

and the problem is solved.

Thanks for the help, it really solved a longstanding issue.

Hullo- I'm having the same problems described above- My screen freezes when I swich to my linux screen.

What is slightly different is that I don't even have a mouse installed (or any type of windows) - anyone shed any light?

KVM Switch Woes

Guess I'm just lucky...I was using the Linksys 2 port KVM between my Win2K Pro box and my Slackware box with no problems. Now I'm using it between my Slack and Caldera boxes, and still no problems (granted--X isn't installed on my Caldera system). Is there any pattern to the distros that were having trouble with the Linksys KVM???

Re: KVM

It seems like Mandrake can deal with it (8.1 at least). You can't set up RedHat 7.2 (the mouse freaks during graphic install mode), but it works fine afterwards if you change it to Intellimouse PS/2.

All of this assumes you are using X. It might work fine with GPM.
