Kudzu question

I installed redhat 7.2 several months ago and couldn't get my modem to work so linux lost its apeal. Then one day I decide to boot it up and kudzu just finds my modem out of the blue. Had to reinstall due to a hard drive issue and again kudzu can't find my modem. Any suggestions?

Before I reinstall, I make a backup of /etc so that I can get my old settings back if I want.

Beinga newbie I had never thought of that, however this last time because of my hard drive issue I didn't even have acess to /etc. However, Kudzu again just out of the blue found my modem again.

Now that it works, you can make a backup like this:

su
cd /etc
tar cvfj ~/etc.tar.bz2 .

Just outta curiosity...does kudzu find your hardware on every other boot?

I had a USB modem that was found (but still wouldn't work) on every other boot, so it would go like this:

Boot 1: No modem
Boot 2: Found Modem
Boot 3: Modem has been removed from system...uninstall settings?
Boot 4: Found modem
Boot 5: Modem has been removed....

Bloody annoying I can tell you.

Oh, what kind of modem is it? If you're still running Windows, have a look under system properties.

I usually have kudzu disabled at startup, except when I'm going to install/remove some hardware. makes bootup quicker.

Interestly enough, kudzu chimes in every boot and says the modem has been found missing. But works ever time. It is a USR3070
