kswapd goes mad

hello there, i have a serious problem here. on my notebook i have the 2.4.9 kernel running on beehive linux. now sometimes the kswapd starts running without any stop. it eats up all cpu-time and the harddisk also works nonstop.
the system still works at that point, but i can't reach it anymore. not even over the network.
i searched the web a little and found out that this seems to be some known problem. (somebody had this with the 2.4.3 version of the kernel) but i couldn`t find any help on this.

check if all your memory is recognized on boot.
then check with vmstat/sysctl if your VM settings (freepages min/max) are ok, max should be 3x min.
else echo 1 >/proc/sys/kernel/disable_kswapd else killall kswapd.
