Konsole can't find pty

I have setup KDE 3.5 on ArchLinux (Noodle) running xorg v.7

when attempting to open the terminal (Konsole), it complains that it cannot connect to the pseudo-terminal (pty). I have found a few things searching Google, but they talk about compiling modules into the kernel. Is there something simple that might be wrong? For example, I have read about xorg v7 being highly modular----perhaps there is a module I need to get?
