keyborad/system freeze at startup

we've had an electrical faulire, a fuse was blown and it wasn't replaced in time so the UPS lost power and you know what happened then
now i rebooted the machine witch i'm using as my test/learning server
boot goes up ok...but
when i get promted to login
when i try to type in my login through the keyboard and i can't login
no mather what i press system does not react to the keyboard
the keyboard is pluged in ok, because i could go into BIOS
and when i rebooted again i was presing num lock repeatedly to check when it freezes
all was ok until the prompt for login didn't show up
the keyboard is PS/2, no mouse
and now the server is phisically inaccessible and i can't login remotely to it either
connection times out when i try to do a ssh connection to it
i've called my ISP and they say that the connection from the servers location is up
so i guess the pppoe script connected, but is it possible that because of this keyboard freeze iptables doesn't get set up corectly?
i have added my iptables settings in /etc/ppp/firewall-masquerade
and in pppoe.conf selected the masquerade firewalling
it worked like this before

i've read somewhere that this problem can ocur because of gpm!?
the distro on the server is slack 11 with 2.4.33.3 kernel
i can get to the server tomorow, so a LiveCD option to fix the problem wont be a problem, if you can just tell me whats wrong and/or where to look for the problem/sollution
