Unhappy keyboard turns off during install

I list as using SuSE Linux, but really can't install the thing.
I partitioned with Partition Magic and booting from the SUSE CD the loader it aimed at the partition I wanted it too.

During the installation, I used a keyboard command to select 800 x 600 video, and it worked. As it continued to intall, I saw my keyboard light go off. All the commands I made were through the mouse.

I got to the second disk on the profesional edition, where it looked like the application software was being installed.

It asked for a password for root and user and bam, my keyboard was useless. Quite a heartbreak, as I thought I was on the last step.
I used the mouse to abort the install, as there was a button for that.

The USB mouse, connected through the keyboard still worked, but I couldn't enter any text.

No help so far from SuSE Support after 6 days. just the computer generated we-got-your-question message.

I'm using an unmodified HP 9680 C with a keyboard that the WIndows Resource Summary Report calls a Standard 101/102-Key or Microscoft Natural Keyboard.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Well, a quick and dirty fix would be getting a PS/2 keyboard for your computer just for the installation... Once you get it running, you can handle the USB keyboard configuration...

Sorry, that's my best idea... I have never used any USB devices with Linux.

Minutes after posting my querry here, the SuSE support people wrote me with the same info.

I had a PS/2 keyboard on my kid's computer and made the swap for loading. It seemed to be running fine, except it claimed that my modem was not detected. I understand this is a common problem.

The support line thought the USB support was an installation bug, but would work fine afterwards.

Today, when I booted up with my original keyboard, I couldn't log in because the keyboard and mouse were out.

I really hope I don't need to swap keyboards everytime I want to experiment with linux.

Thanks again. Being installed is a whole lot better than where I was yesterday.
