Key stroke/command to shut down x and go into the command prompt screen?

Is there a simple key stroke, or key command (Mandrake 9.2, KDE 3.1) to close the gui down and go into the command prompt screen? I want to do this to install a driver, and I don't want to deselect the "Always boot into a graphical interface" option, mainly because of bad experiences in the past. Thanks!
