Kernel v2.4.21 installed

Hi,

I have downloaded the kernel version from kernel.org as well as the patch.What will be the proper steps to install the kernel?Install the kernel and then the patch?

I tried to run the make command in the downloaded kernel directory and it prompts for lots of question , should I answer y for all the questions?

i'd suggest reading through the kernel howto at tldp.org, you don't appear to have gone throught the norrmal configration procedures. also try searching this site

Hi,

Ok..I have found the installation instruction in :

http://www.kernelnewbies.org/faq/index.php3#compile

I am still a steps behind to complete this .I am using GRUB instead of LILO as the boot loader.The last step requires me to edit the lilo.conf but the file is not in the system.

My grub.conf file :

# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,0)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hdb7
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/hdb
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Red Hat Linux (2.4.20-13.8)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-13.8 ro root=LABEL=/
initrd /initrd-2.4.20-13.8.img
title Red Hat Linux (2.4.18-14)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.18-14 ro root=LABEL=/
initrd /initrd-2.4.18-14.img

Can I add a new line to the boot.conf to point to the new kernel?

Thanks

Andy

Hi,

I think I will go for the rpm version directly instead of compile the kernel manually.I have checked on the redhat website and there dont seems to have the version 2.4.21 available.Does any one know where can I get the version 2.4.21 rpm?

Actually that's sposed to be quite easy. Once you configured your kernel, type "make spec" and the .spec file for building the rpm will automagically appear :-]
Now "rpm -bc -vv <spec file>" should build you the rpm. *Note the "-bc" flag, not "-ba": try "man rpm" and see why.
