Kernel Update without Installing Linux - Is It Possible?
hi all,
this may sound a little weird but i need to know if this is possible. I just downloaded the ubuntu 6.10 efty iso image (kernel 2.6.17). is it possible to edit the iso to have the new kernel 2.6.18.2? so that when i install from this image i get the latest kernel version. (i am running winXP) someone please help... Thanks |
I don't think this is possible.

It is probably possible, although it would be much easier to install and upgrade the kernel.

As far as I know, ISO9660 is a read-only filesystem so you'd need to unpack the ISO into a directory, replace the image with the new one. Then the installer would probably be looking for the wrong filename so it'd fail so you could rename it but then if the installer is any good the different kernel image would fail some kind of file integrity check and the installer would fail.
Story juice: Too much hassle. |
the thing is i am unable to install ubuntu with kernel 2.6.17 coz of some sata contoller issues (jmicron p965 chipset asus p5b mobo). so i am thinking of editing the iso and updating the kernel coz 2.6.18 fixed this issue.
any help would be great Thanks |
There have been some discussions of this chipset on ubuntuforums.
Seems if you can run with only SATA it might work. Even if just for the install till you can get an update organized. Don't know for sure, I don't have that equipment. |
