kernel tweaking?

Hello everyone!

Ok, this is my question.

I have used Caldera and Slackware, but I never seem to be satified because I like things simple. Don't get me wrong here, I think Distro's are great, but for me, it's just too much. I read through the Linux From Scratch and BYOlinux (Build Your Own Linux), but I want to go deeper, into the core of linux, the KERNEL. I know very little C programming but when I download the v2.0 kernel I noticed that there are many drivers and system architectures that don't apply to my system. Can I delet these to make a minimal kernel base for me to build a specific Linux tailored to my needs?

Also which kernel is smaller and more organized, BSD-current or Linux-current?

Your expertise would be greatly appreciated...
