Kernel patch questions

Hi,

When I download a patch from kernel.org like patch-2.6.1, what versions of the kernel can this successfully be applied to?

Secondly, how do I do the patching?

Download patch and place the gzipped file or patch file in /usr/src

Then do this command:

patch -p0 < patch-2.6.0

Once patched.. you should be already to go and compile a new image.

Just 2.6.0

Patching usually only works for patching from the last previous kernel version. Like from 2.6.0 to 2.6.1. Or from 2.4.23 to 2.4.24. You cannot patch from like 2.4.22 to 2.4.24 unless you apply patch 2.4.23 first and then 2.4.24 next (unless otherwise specified from the vendor or Kernel.org)

You definately cannot go from like 2.4.24 to 2.6.1 with a patch

Peace,
Whitehat
