Kernel Panic when logging as root

I get a kernel panic when i try to log into root from the console. I can get into root by using my user and the su command. Ive tryed to get error logs in /var/log/messages but it dosn't seem to record them. In any case i am running kernel 2.6.10 with debian potato. I could really use some help. If you need more info feel free to ask and i will do the best i can to provide it. Also if you have some suguesstions about how to get some detailed logs working, feel free to enlighten. Oh and btw, the error is 100% reproduceable. It seems to happen all the time. This started happen ing after I installed X.org, Mesa and DRL to get 3D acceleration working. Not sure if it is related. Help would be appricated! Thanks!

Ok ive done some messing around and narrowed down the problem. It has nothing do to with me logging in as root. The kernel only crashes if i change to the console from X, all i need to do for it to crash is wait a couple seconds. Somtimes switching console screens causes it to crash right away. If i shutdown x and restart it from console the problem goes away.

well, it is really hard to tell if any program errors actualy caused the kernel panic. Mainly becuase the info dump is so long i cant see what started it! All i can see is the last page of the error messages, and as far as i can tell it is not very usefull. *sigh* i guess i should cause it to panic and just record the errors i see by hand...................i wish there was a way to get it to record the error dump........ill post more in a bit.............
