kernel panic trying to bood fedora core 3

please help,
i was having troubles with my computer so i decieded to just reformat/partition it and start over

now when i try to boot my computer locks while loading stage 1 of grub (somethimes it automattically restarts too.)

if i put grub on a floppy and boot through the grub command line like so:

root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuzwhateverthefilenameis
initrd /boot/initrdwhatevertheflilenameis
boot

then it will boot untill these last few lines:

mounting root filesystem
mount: error 6 mounting ext3
mount : error 2 mounting none
switching to new root
switchroot: mount failed: 22
umount /initrd/dev failed: 2
kernel panic - not syncing: attempted to kill init!

if anyone can help, that would be great, if you want more info, just ask

it looks like it's trying to access partitions that don't exist, or have the wrong format. / partition type. doubke check the layout of the drive partition tables, posting the output of fdisk -l if possible. (try using a bootdisk like knoppix, or fedora as a rescue disk to access the system)
