I'm not sure what you're saying here ... "remove FC4". Doesn't "FC4" = "Fedora Core 4", i.e., your ENTIRE operating system?! Can you really use yum to do this?

This almost sounds like something you'd see if you nuked your initrd image in /boot. I guess this is a possibility if yum really "removed FC4". Can you be more specific on exactly what you did with yum? The command you ran? It's been over a year since I played with Fedora so I'm no yum expert. But you've got me intrigued here.
I would say, boot with Knoppix and start snooping around in /boot. See what kernel and initrd files you might still have there.
