I used Fedora Core 4. I compiled a vanilla kernel linux-2.6.15 and, according the grub screen, I always started on this kernel although all screens were the same as when I started with FC4. Suspicious. The uname answered linux 2.6.15. After several weeks I decided to remove FC4 with yum.

Now I cannot work in linux as the starting stops with:

"/bin/sh: ro: No such file or directory
kernel panic - no syncing: Attempted to kill init"

There are more advises but I don´t know how to get them. I only can see the last page from which I got a photo and the two last lines are the abovementioned.

I am writing from Windows. In the grub screen there is yet FC4 but it fails at start.

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure what you're saying here ... "remove FC4". Doesn't "FC4" = "Fedora Core 4", i.e., your ENTIRE operating system?! Can you really use yum to do this?
This almost sounds like something you'd see if you nuked your initrd image in /boot. I guess this is a possibility if yum really "removed FC4". Can you be more specific on exactly what you did with yum? The command you ran? It's been over a year since I played with Fedora so I'm no yum expert. But you've got me intrigued here.

I would say, boot with Knoppix and start snooping around in /boot. See what kernel and initrd files you might still have there.

I wrote:

#rpm -qa | grep kernel

and after:

#yum remove ......(the programs I got with the above order. They were two, I don´t well remember their names, but approx. kernel-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 and kernel-devel-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4).

Yes, I removed the operating system, as I was operating with the linux-2.6.15 kernel and I thought it was enough.

According the advises of yum, 405 files were removed.

In this moment I am writing from Windows, as I have not tried yet to install again a Linux OS, awaiting if anyone can help me with another kind of solution (if possible), as theorically there is a kernel installed (linux-2.6.15).

Is it more clear now?
