Question kernel panic invalid ELF header after Windows crash

Hi,

I have a dual-boot laptop with Debian 8 and Windows 10. Recently I finished a Windows session by simply closing my laptop, which is what I normally do with Debian. When I opened my machine the next morning, I had a BSOD and thusly rebooted. The Debian partition booted and ended with :

/script/init-bottom ... done
/sbin/init error while loading shared library ... libpam.so Invalid ELF header
Kernel Panic

I've since booted with a rescue linux and ran fsck -Cfa /dev/sda8 (the linux partition in question), which found and corrected some errors. However, when I try to boot I still have the same error as above.

The laptop is an Asus Zenbook with a hybrid SSD / SATA disk configuration. Unfortunately I installed everything to a single partition, no separate /root /home...

Does anyone know how I can correct the invalid ELF header error or replace the /sbin/init in order to re-establish my system w/o having to do a complete reinstall?

Thanks in advance,
Sam

Here's a similar problem. See if you can reinstall libpam.

Offhand, my impression is that you might have experienced, say, a transient hardware failure of the disk drive which KO'd both Windows and Linux simultaneously.

I would start by running a SMART (disk-drive internal diagnostics ...) scan on the device to see what it can say about whatever recently happened. The drive should probably be scheduled for replacement immediately.
