Kernel Panic in Gentoo

I am trying to install Gentoo 2004.2

Whenever I get to the reboot part (last step of installing) I get a kernel panic:

kernel panic - not syncing: no init found

When I try to go back into Gentoo (livecd) and mount the hard drive (/dev/hdc3) I have all my files there but the kernel stuff (/boot is empty). I use genkernel

I am using kernel-2.6.9-gentoo-r1, and lilo

There are 3 partitions
hdc1 - ex2, boot
hdc2 - swap
hdc3 - reiserfs, /

This is a pain, because I have to recompile the kernel every restart!
