kernel panic error after rebooting new kernel image
 

Hi kbees,

i am in deep problem and struggling to come out of it.
I have 2.6.9-1.658 kernel running on my system.
I copied source code of 2.6.5-1.358 and compiled ( No compilation errors),

I have done the all the work:
Copying the bzImage in to /boot and
editing the grub.conf file for new kernel image.
Copied the System.map file in to /boot/. etc....

After i reboot the system and select the new kernel image it starts booting for a time and throws out a message:
" kernel panic: Attemted to kill init! "

Can any one please help me out in this regard.

Well, your not giving many specific details, why don't you just boot up with the old kernel and reconfigure the new one, compile and reinstall.

If you didn't keep your old kernel, then shame on you :rolleyes: ;) , you can use one of the kernels of the slackware CD, put in disc 1 and follow the onscreen instructions to boot your installed system with one of the CD kernels, then do as above.

As your not giving many details I assumed you installed it correctly, but missed something vitial out in the configuration, as thats my most common problem when installing new kernels

Well i donot have source code of old kernel (2.6.9-1.658) hence i am compiling the kernel source ( 2.6.5-1.358) and trying to boot with this image, as iam writting some kernel modules which needs kernel headers while comiling, So i have downloaded 2.6.5-1.358 source code.

Iam able to boot the system with old kernel image. (2.6.9-1.658).

Can you not download the source for the kernel you are already using, that would be easiest.

Otherwise you will just have to keep trying to configure source for the kernel you downloaded, I think very few manage to get a fully workin kernel on their first attempt, or even their second and third

That's fine, but what is the root cause for this kind of behaviour.:confused:
