Kernel Panic

I have recompiled a 2.6.13 kernel and get a kernel panic saying:

kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown block (3,1).

I am using a reiserfs file system (compiled statically into kernel). I have checked the block devices and everything else seems OK. My VIA chipset support is also compiled statically into the kernel.

I am not using an initrd as reiserfs support has been compiled into the kernel.

This seems like somthing simple to me, but I can't work it out.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Adam

BTW, I am using LILO (default Slackware bootloader). The entry for the root filesystem is correct (/dev/hda1), so I doubt that this is the problem.

Make sure you have all the codepage stuff selected correctly in the kernel config as well.
