kernel panic
 

My Slackware 9.1 box crashed during power failure and I fear I've lost all my data.

I've been making weekly backups to tape of /home /etc and /var
With /var being the most important since it holds all me websites.
I would however like to pull some configuration files from the backed up version of /etc

Anyway, when power was returned, the machine booted again and I took all to be well, but alas it was not, apache didn't start amoungst a few other things, I then rebooted and watched the boot log, which was full of "Cannot stat" and
"Cannot lstat" warnings, relating to files in /usr/lib, with each one having permission denied. The machine did boot and I was able to unmount most of the partitions and check them with reiserfsck, all seemed well apart from / with was /dev/hda2 if I remember correctly. I tried to rebuild the tree and since then I get a kernel panic on boot.

I've waisted too much time already however and I need a working system again, so my main question is, can I reinstal 9.1 but utilise /var and /home

How do I go about it?

You could re-install slack and leave /var untouched. However, what I would do is pop in a knoppix cd and grab all the data from /var and /etc and scp it somewhere else (like your local computer) and re-install slack.
