kernel module and driver dont match- nvidia

hi -

my graphics arent working. i dont know how it happened.

basically my error msg says "the nvidia kernel module has version 173.14.09 but this nvidia driver component has version 96.43.05. make sure that the kernel module and all the driver components have the same version.

well that is specific. i know the driver component is the right version (96.43.05) i have researched it and it is the correct legacy nvidia driver i need.
geforce fx5200

i just dont know how to adjust the kernel module to match it. the problem started when i did an upgrade from 10.3 to opensuse 11.0 on-line. everything worked ok but it really messed with the graphics. sax2 wont work at all. i get into linux in failsafe mode now. i should have left 10.3 alone but i thought support only runs for 2 years on opensuse and i had free time so i decided to try the upgrade. everything else works excellent (well almost -- the my computer icon wont run- i need it to unmount my usb devices :-(

i am going to get a dell with ubuntu probably on my next pc unless hp, dell or someone sells suse. then none of this matching kernel to driver frustration everytime there is an upgrade affecting the video.

it seemed in 10.3 the process was - kernel updated- recompile as i always do...problem solved again. now i'm stuck. i dont think it will compile because it doesnt match!

i can run nvidia-xconfig if i can get a match and maybe i will have to edit xorg.conf for the busid and then i should be good. i probably cant downgrade a kernel on a new 11 system can i? and i wouldnt know where to find the downgraded kernel either.
sounds like a possible bad idea to do that.

thanks for any help. talk about frustrating.
i have to go to bed. gmt 6:30

Seems the kernel was update during the update, the things is that the nvidia module you had was for the previous kernel, you need to build a new nvidia module for the new kernel, you can just download the nvidia driver from their web page, run it (like ./NVIDIA-something.run), the installer will note that there's no version matching your current kernel and will start to build a new module for that kernel

that should correct the problem

BTW, the nvidia Geforce FX 5200 does not use the 1.0-96xx series drivers. The Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 can use the 173.14.09 and previous versions of the driver. In nvidia's documentation, the Geforce FX 5200 is listed as a supported card.

/usr/share/doc/nvidia/README

Note: The location of this file on your system may vary.

Before reinstalling the nvidia driver, read the instructions for SUSE users.

hi-

i thought i just posted a response and i didnt?
technology and me didnt click this past 24 hours.

yes. i needed 173.14.09. you are correct.
about a 15 minute fix and now everything works.

http://www.nvidia.com/page/fx_5200.html
see the above link and its reference to "legacy"
that through me. had hard time finding a list
with my card in it that matched the correct driver.

sorry..not cool.

thanks!

Glad it work.

I made a mistake of the file that list the supported cards. The list of supported cards is found in /usr/share/doc/nvidia/supported-cards.txt

- Cheers
