kernel is too big for standalone boot from floppy

that is the massage i'm prompted after the kernel compilation. it is a little bigger that 1MB (i guess 1033KB). but the reason why i write about it in here is that the kernel delivered with my distro has 1.2MB. it's esecialy troublesome when i want to create boot disk. it only records lilo on it, but well that is not i quite want. could anyone tell me if my kernel's size is proper, or not and how should i create a boot disk if it is ok. i use version 2.4.24.

when you compile your kernel, try with the command :

make bzImage

Either that or make a boot CD instead.

or just dont use a boot floppy, copy the image to disk, and use a boot floppy with lilo on it to boot the big ass kernel.

Kernel Too Big to fit on Floppy

1. What if make bzImage still makes a kernel that is too big to fit on a floppy?
2. Do I need to install BZip?
3. Is the kernel still ok to boot from HDD?
4. Is the 'kernel too big...' message a compiler error or does it just mean I can't use it with a floppy?

Thanks in advance

It means you cannot boot from a floppy with that kernel.

copy the kernel or bzImage to /boot and setup lilo.conf to boot it.
