Kernel Images
What are the different images for Linux Kernels? I am confused as to what the difference is between a vmLinux versus vmLinuz. Also there are bzImage, piggy etc. Can someone be kind and nice enough to explain to me the details? I am a Linux newbie! Is there a place I can get more information about the same?

As far as I know, since i'm a newbit also, vmlinuz is the kernel image, the reason for the z instead of the x means that it is compressed.
There is bzImage and zImage. It is recommended to use bzImage because it does better compression and u can can pack more in the kernel. Hope some of that help. |
