Kernel compile error

trying to compile my own kernel, i ran make xconfig, configured everything, but using

make dep;make clean;make zImage;make modules

to compile didn't work. I got two "Error 2"s after a few minutes. the last line of output was "make: *** [_mod_drivers] Error 2]" after a "Leaving directory ;.usr/src/linux/drivers'". What's wrong? how can I fix it? If it's any help, i'm running red hat 7.0, and trying to install kernel 2.4.17.
this is my first time compiling the kernel. help me please!

#1: make xconfig && make dep && make clean && make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install

the && will make sure the next command does NOT execute if the previous one didn't exit cleanly.

#2: On your error, does it say what module is failing? THere should be some kind of source code reference or linking reference. Just saying that you had a problem in [_mod_drivers] doesn't really say much.

that didn't work. i get the same errors. it doesn't tell me what module it is, it just says it had an error in that directory.

Are you sure that you got all the sources installed?
You can try buildkernel at http://buildkernel.stearns.org that will install the latest stable sources and the kernel.
You can always modify the kernel afterwards.
