kernel compilation configuration

Sir,

What is the funda in .config? Means I know the options we selected are stored in it (save as different name also)and we can load it and make changes further? But in the "make oldconfig", is it used?

What did "make oldconfig" uses to build?

Regards,
Arunachalam.

"make oldconfig" reads .config and asks questions about options that have changed since the last (old) kernel version. Your answers in "make oldconfig" are applied to changes in .config

If you run "make menuconfig", it reads .config and shows you graphically what options are selected. Any changes you make are stored in .config

The .config file is read when the kernel is compiled to tell what options are selected for compilation.

If I want to save it as .config.new and wish to make, how do I do it?

Means please explain the above with respect to multiple .config (.config.old, .config, .config.new etc.,)

Regards,
Arunachalam.

Code:
cd /usr/src/linux
cp .config .config_old
make menuconfig
cp .config .config_new
