Kernel Compilation Concepts and problems

I have followed this tutorial for compilation
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/compil...kernel-26.html

Almost everything went well. After make install however, we get three files
system map
config
vmlinuz

What are the first two files for? (general explanation would suffice)

Where should these files be located? Currently, on my system they are in /boot. Another weird thing is that i am not able to find /boot/grub/menu.lst coz we'll need to make an entry in grub for the new kernel.
Any idea where possible could i find menu.lst. I even tried using 'locate' but it was of no use.

/boot/grub/menu.lst is specific to grub legacy. It is quite possible that your distro doesn't use that. What distro are you running?

I am using Ubuntu 10.04. I am sure it is using grub coz the grub screen shows "grub 1.7"

That's grub, but it's not grub legacy (version less than 1.0 IIRC).

Is there any particular reason why you are following that method of compiling a kernel? On a Debian based system, the best way IMNSHO, is to use make-kpkg from the kernel-package package.

Cheers,
