Question Kernel 2.6.7 USB Networking Support

My boss asked me for the following:
"We must find or modify the driver, it needs to support Data transfer, Ability to change MAC address and provide Link status under Linux with Kernel 2.6.7."

He's referring to a driver for a a TrendNet TU2-ET100 http://trendnet.com/products/proddet...2-ET100&cat=49

I'm a desktop user for quite some time and comfortable with CLI and most built in tools.

I've gotten this device to work in plug & play in all the current Linux distros with zero problems, it just works.

So my question is, is it realistic to expect this device to work under a deprecated 6 year old kernel? Is it as simple as installing a driver and thats it?

Also, is it the driver that's responsible for determining physical connection status and changing MAC address? I know that normally I use ethtool to determine physical connection status, and MAC address settings is done by editing the sprom on the device.

USB networking in general wouldn't be a problem in 2.6.x, but you really won't know if the specific device is supported until you plug it in and see.
