Hi!
I had kernel version 2.6.1 installed but my hard disk partitions got deleted so I had to do everything form scratch again. Now when I icompiled 2.6.1, it does not start. Here are the errors that the kernel gives on bootup.

Yea... The problem lies with your grub.conf and your /usr/src/kernelversion/.config file....... I'm pretty confident that this is where the problem lies...

How long did you spend on a "make menuconfig"? Did you use the default Redahat ".config" file? I'll keep going instead of waiting for a response... I will asume that your kernel .config file needs some tweaking... I need to install redhat again and spend some time looking at the .config file.... sigh... I have a feeling this is going to be pretty long.

initrd support is only needed under certain circumstances from what I gather. I've been using distro's that don't incorporate it right from the get go so I'm a little fuzzy on the support that it provides. It's important to build certain things INTO the kernel vs. using a module... initrd stands for "Initial Ram Disk". You would need this if you have very important things compiled as modules..... This is why I don't like modules..... If you have root filesystem support or other very important device drivers compiled as modules that need to be loaded RIGHT AWAY, then you need initrd support built into the kernel so it can make a little "virtual file system" in order to load those modules so it can actually boot your system.... Get my point? It's like working overtime just to do a simple task. It's making a what should be a one step process into a very long process.... Pointless..... I would guess either:

1. ext3 is built as a module. If so, you need to build it into the kernel - put a "*" instead of a "M"...
2. That "initrd" line needs to go away completely in your "grub.conf" file.....

I do away with initrd support in my kernel completely along with ditching any "initrd" line in grub.conf..... initrd support in the kernel is found under:

Ya know, last time I installed Redhat, I tried installing 2.6.3 and Readhat IS NOT a 2.6 "ready" distro.... You need to install the latest "mod-utilities" along with some other stuff.... It was a big pain in the ass..... You have implied that 2.6.1 works fine on Redhat 9.... So maybe it's a 2.6.2 and later "thing"..... Not sure..... Let me stop for now.... Just make sure that you are aware of the ramifications of MODULES VS. BUILT-IN..... It's very important with some things..... Here is a VERY good example.... Go to:

Loadable module support ---> Automatic kernel module loading

Try to compile it as a module... Can you? Nope... If you compiled it as a module, then how would it be able to load the module to load a module?...... Once you compile a kernel 10 or 20 times for your machine, you'll start to notice all sorts of little things and it will all start to come together as far as having an understanding with how your kernel is compiled and why it does what it does..... I would suggest spending a good 30 to 40 minutes slowly going thru every option in your kernel so you can let it all absorb..... Post back....

Maybe you are missing ext3 from your kernel.

The default redhat config builds ext3 as a module - because of this you must make sure that the initrd is correctly updated. Alternatively, change the kernel config to compile ext3 into the kernel. If you've already done:

The "make install" will use /sbin/installkernel to do all the right things, including making an new initrd, and inserting a new grub.conf entry that allows you to separately boot your new kernel. (The install step has the kernel build tools search around to find a distribution specific installkernel utility.)

I assume standard Redhat 9 2.4 boots OK which would indicate that the required disk labels are present and are not the source of the problem. And I assume you installed the new mod utilities mentioned previously.

First of all, thankyou all for taking the time to help me out. Secondly, I've already spent DAYS on recompiling my kernel. I must have done it 20 times already and I have a pretty good idea how the kernel works. I know the what the default configuration for the defconfig file are. I changed all of them. I compiled ext3 support into the kernel as well as Journal something. As I said it used to work just before, the only problem being with my soundcard. 2.6.1 didn't detect it whereas 2.4 did. It's a Creative Vibra 128. Anyway, yes I've installed the module-init tools. I think they were version 4. I don't exactly remember. I've edited my /etc/rc.sysinit, /etc/fstab and /etc/halt.d/something files. Even then it doesn't work. 2.4 works just fine and I've done all the steps mentione by Michael too. OK, this may be a lame answer, because I'm not running 2.6 yet.

Anyway: Your fstab and lilo config use the LABEL= convention that Red Hat uses in their 9.x and ES3 (and I think probably everything since 7.2) distros.

Have you used e2label to check the disk partition labels? If they are wrong, you'll have problems similar to what you describe.

You don't need ext3 to mount ext3 partitions, ext2 will mount them but you do lose journalling capability (you probably already knew that).

Device files under 2.6 are supposedly handled very differently from the way they were evolving in 2.4 from what I've read. But again, I'm not running 2.6 yet so take that with a grain of salt. But I've heard rumors that you need to get rid of the LABEL= stuff and use real device names with 2.6 kernels.

have you had a look at the recent security warnings posted in the security "thing" on the LQ front page?

I don't recall if it's there or whether I read it somewhere else, but as I understand it, there's a current warning of some vulnerabilities in kernel versions 2.6.2 and below (I might have read it on "theregister" rather than here), but the recommendation was to either install patches as and when issued by your distro producer or move to 2.6.3

You might want to consider this instead of fighting to get the 2.6.1 working ??

It sounds like you've got past the ext3 problem?

The only problem of yours I identify for sure, is that you sound card doesn't work. You need to work through the howtos, and faqs on ALSA for that. Alternatively, if you were using the old OSS sound drivers, they still work in 2.6 so long as you correctly create a /etc/modprobe.conf and enable the kernel OSS sound modules.

I suspect that building the kernel is no longer your major problem - and that you now have issues with other configs and utilities.

Disk labels still work in 2.6.

The disklabel-based mounts were a means of dealing with the possibility of changing /dev/* file names when new devices are added. (Particularly a problem for less experienced SCSI users). I seem to remember that 2.6 has a new way of solving the same problem?

This error... ...looked to me like a disk label problem. The e2label program can read and write disk labels.

Good to know that 2.6 still supports Red Hat's label-based mounts, though. Thanks for the info!

LOL. Yeah, I can see how you guys could get so confused. No, I still haven't solved any problems. My kernel still doesn't work. As I mentioned, it worked before, but after my system got "cleansed" I had to install it again and now it doesn't. I had the sound card problem when the kernel was working before being wiped out. Now, it gives those errors mentioned in my first post. The shutdown sequence problem, has developed in kernel 2.4.8. Now do u understand? I'm still being forced to use the RH9 default kernel. OK - so you're saying your 2.6 kernel doesn't boot and reports something like:

mkrootdev: Label / not found

This would indicated that either / isn't labelled "/" or ext3 isn't built into the kernel or isn't in the initrd.

Check the label - as root run e2label against your root filesystem ide device - for example for me this would be:

This should output /

I can't see how the stock kernel could boot if this was wrong - if your /etc/fstab has
a line like:
The the stock kernel will be using a label.

Check your grub.conf, the root entry for the stock kernel and the 2.6 kernel should be the same. Also check that they are referencing the right vmlinuz and initrd. For example, here are the relevant lines from mine:
If you change the .config at any stage - you should start from scratch - from make mrproper.
After a build and install - check that the build dates match on the vmlinuz-2.6.* and initrd-2.6.*.img files.

I'll try that next time, but I don't think the there's any problem with the kernel configuration. I've posted my defconfig file above, you can check for yourself and see that ext3 support is in fact built into the kernel. I'll reply with the results of later. Thanks.
