KDE Won't Start

I'm having trouble starting kde. It used to start automatically when i booted but now i get a black screen with all the startup messages and a login prompt. This happened after i tried installing new video card drivers so i could output my screen to the tv. I replaced /usr/X11 with something else because it was just a link to /usr/X11R6 so i thought it was pointless. Now if i login at the prompt and type kde to start it it says:
xset: unable to open display ""
xset: unable to open display ""
xsetroot: unable to open display ''
startkde: Starting up...
kdeinit: Aborting. $DISPLAY is not set.
Warning: connect() failed: No such file or directory
ksmserver: cannot connect to X server
ERROR: Couldn't attach to DCOP server!
startkde: Shutting down...
I don't know how to fix what i did to it before. I tried installing XFree86 by downloading it on a different computer and moving it over and installing it, hoping this would be used to detect the display and start kde but it didn't work. I'm running Suse 10.0 and my video card is an ati radeon 7500. Any help with this would be appreciated.

Its X that is not starting, not kde.
Your display should be :0.0
manually do (in bash)
Code:
export DISPLAY=:0.0
and try to launch X or directly KDE (which maybe will launch X)

Otherwise, removing X and reinstalling seems to be the best.

I tried what you said and it still didn't work. It gave pretty much the same error message except it said unable to open display ":0.0". I have a laptop if that makes any difference. I'm really a noob so if there's no other solution could you please explain how to reinstall X? Thanks

apt-get reinstall X or something like that- Try a Google search for the exact code.

I tried that and it said apt-get is an unknown command and I couldn't find anything that told me how to do it in a google search. Any idea on another way to do it?

sounds like you messed up more than just kde then. I'd try booting from a rescue disk, backing up all of your files, and just going with a clean install.

DanTaylor, maybe because he's running suse and that under suse they don't have apt-get
thelorax314, it's important if you fill "distribution" in your user-profile, you will get quicker answers

Don't reinstall yet, if its not too late.

Now your question is: how to reinstall X under suse
and my answer is: don't know suse sorry

I'm sure its fairly easy. Suse users in the room?
