KDE is gone and the noob is helpless!

I installed Mandrake on my dual-boot system yesterday without a hitch. I messed around with it quite a lot without any problems. Today, I used the bootloader to start up in Windows XP to do some stuff. When I decided to boot into Mandrake again, I accidentally selected Linux-Enterprise on the bootloader screen and was presented with a command-line. So, I reboot again, this time selecting just plain "Linux" on the boatloader. Once again, the command-line interface! This is not right, however, as I have been using KDE, and the KDE/Mandrake GUI login screen has been showing up until now. Does anyone know where my GUI login has disappeared to and how I can get it back?

Have you tried logging in at the cli and running startx? I haven't used mandrake for a while but check /etc/inittab and look for a line like ==> id:3:initdefault: if it looks like this you can edit it to ==> id:5:initdefault: . Runlevel 3 will get you the command line runlevel 5 will get you a gui login. What boot loader are you using grub or lilo?

log in from command line and If you can start GUI again by typing 'startx' as Lindy said above, then run 'XFdrake' from a terminal window and in advanced options answer 'yes' when prompted about automatic graphic login and you'll recover it

good luck

Login to the console as root, then enter
<startx kde> to start kde. It should remember the last
setting, so the next time startx only will start kde again.
