If you are going to do a clean install, that means deleting everthing by formating the partition. What are your specs? They may be simply to slow to handle KDE. If so, try a standalone window manager like IceWM or WindowsMaker.

Did you set the visual effects to the minimum in kpersonalizer ?
This might help speed up kde.

Maybe the problem is with X more than with the window manager. Have you changed things in your xorg.conf? Have you installed lots of new fonts?

Before resinstalling X, try editing your xorg.conf and change the video driver to vesa. See if that changes anything. Maybe the nvidia driver you're using is incompatible or needs tweaking.

The easiest way to reinstall X would be to use the packages from your install cd. Boot in commandline mode as root, remove the existing packages then reinstall them from your cd.

The X packages are all named x11-something. X itself would be x11-6.8.2. Try that one first. The rest are docs and fonts and extras.
