Try deleting your (home).kde directory then try again, after making a backup of course.......

cp -r .kde .kde_hold
rm -r .kde

juanb 01-07-2006 02:35 PM

It didn't help !!!

I cant belive mandrake is so shitty and I will need to reinstall all the Os... :-(

Thanks !

amosf 01-07-2006 04:35 PM

This is very unusual. I have 6 kde desktops here on unrealiable power which goes out every couple of weeks and never get this trouble... No, you should not need to reinstall as linux is running. You need to boot into runlevel 3 (test mode) and run the gui manually (startx) so you can determine where the problem lies. If it is a kde issue, then running rm -rf .kde and deleting the .kde config directory should fix it. Are you sure you deleted it as detailed above? Need to get a few more details of the system. Do you have it booting straight to kde with automatic logon, or do you go through a gui login screen first?

juanb 01-07-2006 04:53 PM

Yes. I deleted the .kde direcory.
before the problem I had a gui prompt to enter my user name.

I always enter my user name which is a non root user.

I changed /etc/inittab to run in run level 3 login as root and than I issue the command startx and the gui came up.

What to do next?

thanks for your help !

another issue...not so related..

before the problem few days ago I tried to install xmms from the packge manager. I choosed all the xmms packges and package manger askded me for cd number 4. it is starnge cause there are only 3 image cd's to download for version 10.0 right? so from where I should bring another cd? I tried to insert cd number 3 but It didnt help.. ho... I have kernel 2.6.3-7mdk.

Thanks very much !

Moved: This thread is more suitable in Linux-General and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.

Have you tried fsck of all the partitions when they're unmounted (from boot cd, if possible)?

amosf 01-09-2006 12:16 AM

Could be the kdm boot manager got screwed up. Run the mandrake control center and maybe you can run the boot config to fix things up... Although... Can you log in as a user and boot up into the gui as well? Or only root? If you can't log in as user and start gui then maybe trouble with home directory. Is home on it's own partition? If so them maybe needs fsck like Mara said...

juanb 01-10-2006 11:46 AM

I can boot to kde with root, I enter run level 3 and tham startx. the user I always log in to is stuck when I enter KDe , I just see a blue screen and the mouse corsur. I tried to create another user and I also get stuck in the same place.

juanb 01-10-2006 12:13 PM

I notice that the KDE session crashes when I am logged on as root.

the KDE session is aborting and I got left on a terminal. this is what I see:

worning: symbol map for key <SPCE> redefined Usinf last definition for conflicting fileds
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server.

FATAL server error:
Caught signal 11.server aborting.

Please help me !!!!!!!!!!!
