KDE Desktop

When I started KDE up the other day, the icons on my desktop were missing. Restarting X doesn't help. The logout and lock buttons don't work on the "taskbar" (don't know what Linux calls it), as neither does alt-F2.

As far as I know I've done nothing to Xs' setup, nor the graphics libraries. I haven't tried to run gnome or anything else yet either.

Any ideas?

P.S. Sorry if this is another of those "run XConfigurator" posts :)

No, your actually in X, your just missing some icons. Does everything work though like from the kde menu? what about your desktop directory for that particular user where it stores what icons you will have displayed? and what about other users, do they have the same problem?

glj 07-27-2001 08:23 AM

KDE menu works fine, desktop directory looks fine, all permission look ok etc, and it doesn't affect the other users.

Unfortunatley, it's the root user that's affected! (D'oh)

is it just the icons gone from your desktop or are the files missing from /root/Desktop too?

If the files are in the /root/Desktop directory and not on you r desktop, I would suugest right-clicking on your desktop and choosing arrange icons. I had a problem before when I reconfigured X where all of my icons were just off the screen. They were still there, I just couldn't get at them.

The icons are in the Desktop directory, but a right click on the desktop doesn't do anything.

This is definitely odd, have you tried booting the computer completely instead of just X. When linux boots back up, I would clean out the contents of the /tmp directory before starting X and KDE(while in runlevel 3 or lower). I thought I remembered a problem that someone had before because of stale files in the /tmp directory.

This is'nt much more than a guess and it won't hurt anything. It may or it may not but it will at least give you something to try until someone comes up with a more educated answer.

Good Luck

I rebooted the computer and cleaned out the /tmp directory, but root still doesn't have a functional desktop.

It's pretty annoying!

Have you tried manually adding the icons back?

funkup 07-30-2001 07:26 AM

unless you have a seriously customised kde desktop
drop out of x
remove the .kde directory (i think but there may be others)

and rerun x

it will recreate the desktop for you as fresh as a baby;s bum

glj 07-30-2001 08:30 AM

deleted the .kde dir. It recreated the icons on the "taskbar", but the desktop is still the same - broken ;)

Noticed an interesting side-effect today. The screensaver came on, but only on the desktop, and stayed on after mouse movement and key-strokes. I can use the KDE menu and everything, and it still doesn't stop the screensaver.
