I installed XFree86 v 4.2.0. I selected Yes to overwrite all of the config files (quite possibly a mistake). Now, I cannot get KDE to come up. Instead, when I startx, I get another Windows Manager program (tcm?)
I don't even know where to start with this one...how do I get KDE back? I've tried running kdeinit but it comes up with an error that there is no $DISPLAY defined. From the windows manager, I can start KDE. It looks as though it is starting as usual, on top of the other window manager, and then it goes back to the window manager screen. If I ps -aux, it shows the normal KDE apps running, but I cannot get to a desktop.

If you have a file in your home directory called .xinitrc (yes, there is a dot infront - that means it is a hidden file), then post the contents here. If there isn't, then make it, edit it and put exec startkde as the only line.
I am still unable to get a usable KDE desktop environment however.
Here's what all I've tried--the results are all variations on a common theme:
1) There was no .xinitrc file. I tried creating one and putting the command 'exec startkde' therein.
Result: KDE starts to load. A popup appears stating that there was a problem starting kdeinit. I click OK on this, and KDE loads to a solid blue screen without any icons or taskbar. I have to CTRL-ALT-BKSPC to get back to a shell prompt.
2) I tried running kdeinit from bash. The result is an error message stating that no $DISPLAY variable has been set, after which kdeinit terminates. I could not find where to set this variable; I'm not sure where kdeinit looks for these settings. I'm assuming that this same problem spawned the error mentioned in #1.
3) I deleted .xinitrc, started twm, exited twm, then ran startkde from an xterm window. Same results as in #1.
I get the feeling there is a config file that needs to be changed or created, but am not sure where...
