Kanotix in VMplayer, guest drives are missing

Hi, Ive got Kanotix 2007 RC6 "Thorhammer" installed in VMPlayer with WINXP (NTFS) as guest. Problem is that Kanotix wont recognise my XP partitions, fdisk –l only returns Kanotix information. So I made a mount point “media/windows” and added following (last) line to Fstab …. /dev/hda1 /media/windows ntfs user,ro,auto 0 0 .

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# /dev/sda1
UUID=a2f64cd2-1caf-4e9a-8589-c37daaf8fe2a / ext3 errors=remount-ro 0 1
UUID=f4c0d999-1068-4cc7-b32a-0c89cdc6e958 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/hdc /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0
/dev/hda1 /media/windows ntfs user,ro,auto 0 0

NTFS partitions are still not recognised and command… mount -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /media/windows…just returns….special device /dev/hda1 does not exist.
I tried out CD (bootable) version of same Kanotix and it mounted NTFS automatically. Being new to Linux Im at a loss here and would gratefully appreciate any help.

This reads like a problem/question with VMWare's vmplayer, not a linux question per se. I recently had some problems similar to this, but was related to the Windows XP Remote Connection tool. I had to check the boxes to bring my devices through.

And, for what it's worth, if fdisk -l doesn't return a device, creating a mount point and trying to mount a non-existent device won't change the fact that the device doesn't appear to exist

I'll move your post to Linux - General as I think it's a little more advanced than newbie.

Thank you for your reply.Ive since discovered that mounting NTFS from Windows within VMPlayer simply isnt supported as VMPlayer serves as a shield between both systems.
But my next problem in the continuing challenge with Linux and its scary little text-box concerns video play and Mplayer...it patiently awaits some kind souls attention in "Newbies".
