Japanese & Chinese input methods on English Gnome / Fedora Core 2 + Gimlet shortcuts

I'd like to setup my Gnome desktop to be able to input Japanese and Chinese text in English locale. The IIIMF that comes with the Fedora Core 2 distro looked fine, so I added the Gimlet input method switcher to the toolbar, and added Japanese and Simplified Chinese as additional input languages.

It works, but there are a few things that make it uncomfortable.

Gimlet should be able to switch between languages with Ctrl-SPC, but it doesn't work - and even if it worked, I'd like to reconfigure it in order not to get mingled with emacs (I know about C-@, but I like C-SPC...). It would be the best if I could create specific keyboard shortcuts for English, Japanese and Chinese input.
A "European" input method appeared, which seems to differ from standard English input only in the fact that I cannot enter spaces or punctuation marks. Gimlet randomly switches to this method when I go between virtual desktops... anyone with the same problem? Japanese (canna?) input also does it sometimes, these may be connected somehow.
The standard simplified Chinese input (chinput?) isn't very bright, though it learns fast :) I wonder if I can tell IIIMF to use another program - like scim or xcin or fcitx (which is the best?).
Thank you for any advice...
