Is this possible?
Is this possible?
I have a headless desktop with a wireless pci card in it. The computer is running mpd server and I would like to connect to it. Basically I don't want it connected to another local area network I just want the wireless card inside to broadcast like a router with its own ip so you can connect to it and manager the computer. If it is possible how do I create it? Thanks |
Try using useful titles in future if you want meaningful ressponses

billymayday, I was not sure how to title this.
|
a good title may be: "Is it possible to have Wireless AD-HOC server control?"
Either way, I would assume it would be... You may need to run a dhcp server from the box. Then you could place restrictions as to what mac addresses can connect to it. |
lumak, super thanks I will looking into it now. Thanks for helping me understand what some of the technologies are called.

What's an mpd server, and what is the PC connected to?
|
billymayday, is a music server http://mpd.wikia.com/
The pc is connected to nothing, just sits there by its self. |
I'm missing something here - if it's a server and it's headless, what's it serving to unless it's connected to something?
|
billymayday, it is connected to speakers. I did not understand your question, sorry for the confusion.
|
To me, headless means no screen, no keyboard, but I suspect that isn't what you mean. Do you just mean it's not networked?
|
I see what he means... He wants an un changing box that just sits there doing nothing other than playing preloaded songs all day. It seems interesting... but the ease of getting this working through an ethernet controlled/connected box seems to outweigh the benefit of actually getting this to work. Unless you move it almost every day to different places and networks. Then I could understand that having it a completely standalone box would be nice. If you want to practice with such things without the added complexity of wirless, try doing a direct connect with ethernet first. (you may need a crossover cable)

lumak, I have done an adhoc network in the past with Windows and cross over cables but this seem interesting a adhoc wireless. My concern is that I would not like for it to me limited to one user connecting at a time. A sceneio is sometimes I can see a friend I look at the music content at the same time.
