Is there any media application for linux with uPnP support?

Is there a multimedia application for linux that has uPnP media sharing similar to MS windows media player?

What is that MS windows media player does?

VLC supports upnp playback and streaming to other upnp devices.

I have an android tablet and I want to stream media from my linux pc to my android device. I am currently using the samba protocol to stream media.

I want to try this method using uPnP now, but the manual only has instructions for MS media player. I don't have windows on my pc.

In MS media player, uPnP allows you to share/stream your music/video/pictures library to a uPnP compatible device or player.

Before I posted on this thread I did a google search on VLC and uPnP but didn't find anything I was looking for. If you or anyone know how I can use VLC and uPNP together please let me know.

I've used it with an X-Box, and it works nicely. But it doesn't do transcoding, so it might not be so good for an Android phone.

Never tried it, but it has a lot more features, and I think it can do the trancoding. Also, first look in the package management system of your distro, you usually don't have to compile this yourself.

Are you wanting to stream or share???? You use samba to share.
Streaming takes an application that must encode and encapsulate media and stream to a client. Think of your browser and YouTube. YouTube takes media in every format, encodes it to one spec and streams it to you.


UpNP is just another protocol like NFS, CIFS (Samba)....... it by itself is nothing special.

If you're looking to create a media sharing portal, you need a media server. Mediatomb is easy to get going.

I have mediatomb in my package manager, so I will try that.

The Music player in my android has the options to play both uPnP and SMB protocols. Right now I am using SMB to play media files off my pc to my android device.

But as the media is playing through my android, I see it as streaming :)

Mediatomb did the trick. Now I can play both SMB and uPnP shares to my android tablet.
