Is putting lilo/grub below cyl 1023 still required?

Is putting lilo/grub below cyl 1023 still required?
Linux or lilo used to require that lilo was installed in the first 1023 cylinders of the hard drive. Is this still the case (with grub and recent kernels)?

not for at least a year or so, also i thought GRUB never had this problem, i could be wrong...
