Question Is it still possible to install Yellow Dog (or something else) on a PS3?

Yellow Dog's official instructions are very clearly dated and Google searching has not uncovered how to do it with the latest version of the PS3's OS; this either clearly doesn't work anymore or just no one's bothered to try.

Tell me I'm wrong?

probably because the 'other os' option that allowed installing linux on the Ps3 was removed by $ony, so i suppose theoretically you can, if you can figure out how to get the ps3 firmware to boot the yellowdog disc, or find an older copy of the firmware that supported booting other os at the cost of most sony's online game support.

You'll need firmare 3.15 or earlier on the PS3 to enable installation of "Other OS". Sony removed the support for other operating systems after that level. It turns out there may be a way to do it after 3.15. See this: Other OS

I installed Yellow Dog on my PS3 back in 2007. It was a fun exercise, but I didn't actually use it as a Linux system since it was much easier and more productive to use my two Linux desktops and three laptops. I preferred the Sony OS on the PS3, as it functioned best for my intended purposes, which was playing games and watching Bluray discs.

No more.
A great mistake for Sony. What a pity!
