Is 64 meg Laptop not enough for games?
 

I have a 64 MB, 4 gig, 333 mhz, presario 1260 laptop. I am running red-hat 9 with fluxbox for my window manager. The computer was given to me with an empty HD and I put on as little as possible so I won't be hurt if the answer is it can't happen, but I was wondering if isn't possible to play games on this computer because I tried last night and it was too slow to do anything, the mouse was real jerky. I have read some of the speed up your computer posts, but I thought maybe it was a lost cause for me. ANy thoughts?

What kind of games are you looking to play? I doubt you'd get unreal or quake up and running smoothly without disabling everything in the world. Sorry,

Abit off topic, but does redhat run smoothly enough on the laptop?

I installed it on a 550mhz with 64 mb ram, and it was really slow, took forever to open applications.

Anyway, back to the topic, like goldennuggets said, you'd have problems running more upto date games, but things such as doom or doom2 should run no problem.

Theres also your graphics adapter to think about, how much memory has it got, and is it sharing it with your main memory.
i.e. if your running with a 4mb shared graphics adapter, then really you've only got 60mb of main memory.

But when you say that redhat didn't run smoothly for you, what did you change to? Did it help? It runs okay, but I just got it and would prefer to be moving faster. I figured it was just the stats of my computer that was the problem.

I dont have much experience with linux, so instead I removed redhat at installed a distro called 'VectorLinux' its kinds like a bare bone linux system (fits on 1 cd), and is designed to run quickly on older machines.

Fair enough, it doesnt install as simply as redhat, but not too difficult either. People on here can help, or on the vectorlinux message board.

It runs in text mode to start off with, but you can easily configure it to run GUI. The GUI's supplies with it are less demanding on your system resources, so again, it helps run more smoothly.

RedHat it brilliant, but I think its far too demanding. Obviously someone will probably be able to help you get rid of some of the excess baggage in redhat, sorry I couldnt help further.

That's cool. You have me intrigued though. What window manager are you running to run gui? If you are that is.

I tried to play the ones that I found on the install package iso from my red hat disks. Two of them were tuxracer and chomium. Neither I have heard of, and since I couldn't get them to play well i am not sure what they are.

As far as my graphics adapter I believe that it is taking 4 megs of the 64 to run as well.

I just was looking at top while tuxracer is running and it doesn't seem to be using that much of the memory or CPU so it must be something other than my memory problems.

128 megs ram (no swap !!!)
1 gig hard drive
ati rage 128 16meg

of cource there is no disk space so i had to create symbolic links to the pak and modem files on the cd :)

oops,t hat should say MODEL files ;)

I'm running with fluxbox gui at the moment, sometime switching to xfce(i think its called).

They are bot pretty quick.
