Hi Linux expert
Appreciate if anyone can help. I am using Red Had Linux 7.2 kernel 2.4.7-10smp for my server (compaq proliant)

My server is not stable, I have to reboot many times for it to work. Sometimes during the boot process error message appear sometimes has not error message and it boot up ok. I have encountered server freeze in two occasion.

1) After boot up and log in, I insert my backup tape. Before I can do anything it appear the following message then it freeze.

2) Error happen during the boot process
Remounting root filesystem in read-write mode:
Uhhuh, NMI received, Dazed and confused, but trying to continue you probably have a hardware problem with your RAM chips.

Apparently the kernel couldn't handle the memory bank at some point, you should try to run a memory test utility like memtest86 for a couple of hours or try to update your kernel ...

Thanks for reply. Where can I get the memtest86 utility ? where should I download it ? What is the function of memtest86 ? what is this utility doing ? After run the unitility what should I do ?

I am new to this problem. I need to make a clone harddisk and test the unitility how can I do that ?

It has the description of all tests used, the application to download, and all information you will need.

To backup your data, there are several applications that can do this kind of job, but an option is to backup with tar.
