I am studying linux on my own. I have a dual partition of Linux and Windows XP. I am satisfied and overwhlemed by Linux. There are only some few obstacles which I have. One is that on XP to connect to the Internet through the dial up it is very simple as I have to do very little to set up the configuration. But on Linux, no matter how much I try I am not able to understand how to set up the dial up connection. Can someone help me?
It does help if you tell us which distro you are using now. Next we need to know your modem name and model. It makes it easier if you install a dialer if you don't already have one. Most distros have the option of installing ones called (kppp for the kde desktop) and (wvdial for the gnome desktop).
Distribution: I have not stuck to any one right now.

For starters I am working on Xandros 3 and it has a KDE environment. It is installed on an Acer laptop (model Travelmate 2412NLCi). Well from the "device manager" in the "system information" I have found this "SoftV90 Data Fax Modem with SmartCP" - I dont know whether its the driver's name or the modem's name..maybe both. Is this much info enough.
From what I have been able to read from these forms you need to log in as administrator and then there should be an internet setup wizard that will guide you through the setup. If you got your modem information from the Xandros distro I presume you don't have to worry about a modem driver. If not the wizard is supposed to have a hardware detection. I am the administrator. There is this "First run wizard". In between the process of making an internet connection it gives an error stating that a winmodem (?) is not there. Dont know what it is.
From what I have read your modem has a conexant chip which will require a driver. Use the "Google" search and enter modem conexant driver. This will give you numerous articles on installing a driver.
