Installing XP w/ Mandrake 9.1
 

Hello,
I'm completely new to the whole LInux thing... I decided to install it on a whim.

Anyway...

I currently have 2 hard drives (C=Master, D=Slave). On drive C is Linux. I want to install XP on drive D. There was exisiting things on that drive and I booted from the XP cd and deleted the drive D partition (to start fresh). However, XP will not install on that drive; it states that it doesn't recognize the file system or something to that nature.

My question is, how do I get a dual boot set up with XP on my D drive and Linux on my C drive? I don't understand why XP won't install on my D drive if there's nothing on it... not even a partition?

I forgot to say that during the XP set up, it states that it cannot install to my drive D because it has to write some stuff to the C drive, but that's partitioned in an unknown format according to XP.

Yeah, you can install XP to your D, but it will whine. It likes to be installed on the first partition. So I'd do that if you can. What you could do if you'd rather stick to the way you originally want is to format the C drive as FAt16/32 or NTFS and then install XP to D, and then install Linux to C. The Linux install will reformat that partition, so hopefully XP won't be using it.

Also, if you are going to reinstall both OS's, do XP first, and Mandrake second, as that will make bootloader configuration issues much easier since Mandrake's bootloader creates an entry for XP and allows it to be booted into, while XP's doesn't get along with Linux.
