Hi im thinking of installing openSuse linux 10.3 on my pc which already has windows on it. Im wondering if the installation will automatically shrink the windows partition which takes up the whole drive or will i have to do this before i go to install linux. I have about 50 gb free space on my hard drive and i dont want to lose my current windows files
Don't worry about it. OpenSUSE has one of the easiest installers around and it provides you with to simple to use tools for creating or resizing Windows partitions. Just download openSuse, burn the image to a disk, boot from it and the installer will (help) you to take care of the rest. In fact, chances are that you will find Suse's installer far easier than XP's
SkinnerC's suggestion is good. Always defrag your HD a couple of times before resizing it. But just to make things clear, use OpenSUSE installer to create/resize the partitions for you. There is no need to use third party Windows software, such as Partition Magic (which is very good though).
Thanks for the replies. So i'll defrag my hard drve in windows and install openSuse 10.3. What happens when I have this done and im booting up do i get a prompt on screen of which operating system to boot??

Yes, you do!!. Linux can detect window partition (although they don't detect what version of window, but who care) and add it into the grub menu, from there, you will choose either of OS to boot into
