Installing Linux on second HDD

I have installed windows on my first HDD. i.e., Primary master. How can i install Linux on my second HDD so that with a boot manger i can select Win/Linux at boot time.

To complicate matters , what would happen if i made the second HDD as the primary with the jumper settings. Would Linux boot without the boot manager (LILO/GRUB).

Also i would like to have the flexibility of choosing win2k/Nt/9x on the first.

Which is more stable LILO/GRUB.?

Thanks in advance.

Just specify your second hard drive as where you want to install Linux. When it installs your bootloader it will put it in the MBR of your first HDD no matter where you install linux.

As for which is better, I prefer grub, but lots (most?) of people like lilo. That sort of question can start flame wars...I like grub because you can change the configuration without having to reinstall it. You will just have to pick one and go with it.

Oh yeah, with grub you can choose from as many operating systems as you can fit on your disks, and lilo I believe (and I am sure someone will correct me ) is limited to 16. Probably more than enough for most people though...

Good luck.

I have 98,2000 and XP on the master. The slave has Debian and Slackware. Got tired of having to cycle through two splash screens and started using Windows NTLDR because you can edit Lilo so that you never get the second screen.

Yes, with lilo that's easy. Just install linux on the second hd and when you install lilo tell it to install on mbr of the first hd.
