Installing GCC 2.96 on Fedora 6

Hey, I'm a totally newb to Linux and I'm working on a project for school that requires extensive Linux work (don't ask). Anyways my problem is that I have to install gcc 2.96 on my machine running Fedora 6(currently running 4.1). Can someone tell me (or point to a source that will tell me) how I can go about doing this?

Thanks!

Here's a little light on the subject.

Most responses towards someone looking for the easy way out when it comes to school projects here at LQ will yield similar results to this one.
If I were to tell you flat out how to do it, you may not learn much about gcc and/or multiple versions of gcc in the same OS. But if you were to ask that question in the Google search field at the top of your browser or navigate to www.google.com and ask the question there, you are likely going to read (and learn) a few web pages of info before you manage to do it, thus you will learn more about gcc than you would if I were to do your homework for you.

I've tried that! I've looked into installing with RPMs, but they all require me to uninstall my current GCC. When I followed the instructions here: http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-gcc.html I got errors when I tried to "make".

Can anyone help?

They say: Persistence pays

And you're persistent.
Ok, I am not a gcc guru, but I do mention in the thread link below how I worked around a similar situation with Mandrake, only I had to go to a higher version, not a lower version. It is best to use the rpm extension that takes care of dependencies such as libraries. Like using yum. And quite frankly, what you mention in your last post is what I did. I also posted a link to a blog on using multiple versions of gcc in an effort to help this person, which has different "Usage" instructions.

Tip:

If you change the value of "keepcache=0" to "keepcache=1" in /etc/yum.conf. It is very quick switching from one to the other as the packages will always be there on your system ready to be installed when needed, you won't have to wait for downloads. The cache is in /var/cache/yum/

Not sure if you'll get that version of gcc in Fedora 6 repos. But rpm should tell you which dependencies it needs which you'll have to install first. But use yum to remove the current version to also remove dependencies so you don't get version conflicts.
