?? installed memory is not recognized
 

Hi, Penguins.

I am not sure if this problem is hardware or software.

I added 1GB memory onto Debian penguin running on Toshiba Satellite A100-ST2311, which originally had 256MB.

So, one slot (original) has 256MB, the other (used to be open) has 1GB. (1G + 256M memory total)

However,free command only recognize less than 1GB, way more than 256MB. Old days, there was a problem to handle more than 16MB, but I do not think this is the case.

Is my penguin normal? Is there anything I can do?

well what does your computer report in the POST screen ? If you can't read it there, then just check in your BIOS... that'll be the easiest way to figure this out.

Your kernel is probably not compiled with support for high memory. Check that, if it's the case you need to recompile a kernel.

:) uselpa is correct. config -> processor type... -> GO DOWN... support high mem.

I did not read it because there was no description. I was confident old 16M day remnant.

few things come to mind:

indicates that you need the newer type of ram. your post does not indicate what type/speed of ram your bought. it may not be compatable with the brand and speed of your original ram.

sadly the toshiba site does not give any information about the details on that system so far as the max ram capacity. it could max out at 1G in that case to test it i would take out the 256M stick and try it with just the 1G stick. if it does nto give you any errors, then you know the issues. you may also just have to swap them around a bit.

i would try those 2 things before i would go messing with a kernel recompile.

Yes, I bough PC2-4200 DDR2 533 memory.

And I already compiled kernel, Now :)

I was not confident to pull memory out from slot without any damage.....
